Act like a local

TINY HYPERMARKETS

Run out of cigarettes, condoms or tissues? Need a beer or a snack at 4 in the morning? Go straight to a periptero (kiosk). There are hundreds of them throughout the city, many are open 24 hours and they have everything you may need.

BECOME A COFFEE JUNKIE

We consume gallons of coffee and spend hours in cafés talking, doing business and reading newspapers. Explore the city’s coffee culture, from Starbucks to local cafés, enjoying our favourite drink: iced-coffee,frappé.

LIKE A HOBO

Thessaloniki has one million inhabitants and some hundreds of stray dogs, which are a part of our city’s life. They live in specific neighbourhoods, have names and even wait for the green light to cross the road. Usually they are little lazy, but if you attract their interest they will accompany you on your walk. However, in Ano Poli, the old town district, stray cats are the ones who dominate public space.

NO-SMOKING

The government feels it has succeeded in its anti-smoking policy, but actually, since the majority of Greeks enjoy smoking, there is almost no non-smoking place in the city – although this doesn’t mean you have to start smoking!

DON’T FORGET YOUR SWIMMING SUIT

We know, the idea of the sea being a few steps away from your hostel is challenging. But, please, don’t jump into Thermaikos! It is not that clean. You’d better catch bus no. 69 and go to Epanomi beach, only 1 hour from downtown by city bus, which is pleasant, clean enough and cheap.

LIGHT A CANDLE

Visit one of the hundreds of Byzantine churches, which date back to the 15th century, and light a candle like many young Greeks do regularly. Each church is dedicated to a saint and each saint has a purpose. For example Aghios Fanourios helps you find lost things - the only thing you have to do is to make a Fanouropita (Fanourios pie), go to Aghios Fanourios church and have the priest bless it.

MEET THE RIGHT PEOPLE

Don’t worry if the city is empty during summer. Everybody goes to Chalkidiki, the popular peninsula with the exotic beaches. Make friends with somebody who has a summer house and spend a couple of days there.

STICK TO WINE

Alcohol is quite expensive in Greece (beer around 5€). Stick to house wine at a taverna. It’s tasty and cheap. If you prefer beer, try our local Vergina from a periptero.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FOOTBALL TEAM

Thessaloniki has three football clubs. HERAKLIS, the oldest one, ARIS and PAOK, founded by migrants from Asia Minor. Each time two of the clubs play against each other the city is divided into blue, yellow and black and the public transportation system collapses. If you want to attend a match, make sure you wear the right colour.

IT´S NOT AN EXCORCISM

When you see people in the street or in the bus making the sign of the cross, don’t worry, they are not performing an exorcism. It is a sign of respect and faith as they pass a church.
